The new album serves as both a homecoming it marks their return to Sub Pop, for whom the Whigs were the first signing from outside the labels Northwest base and a glimpse into the future of one of the most acclaimed bands of the past thirty years. The Afghan Whigs has always been Dullis more personal and confessional outlet while The Twilight Singers served as a more abstract and vague channel for his continued ruminations on morality and mortality, spirituality and sexuality. Since Dulli has weathered and aged through his Singers material, Do To The Beast is a decidedly more mature venture than the Whigs 1990s output, injecting it with a gravity and solemnity commensurate with Dullis current station in life. Do To The Beast leaves you emotionally wrought. Where Dulli had previously played the sleaze we reveled in living vicariously through, here he has us choking back tears for him, the violent aggressor. And Do to the Beast chronicles a relationship just as damaged as you'd expect from Dulli, but the songs don't quite cohere into a larger statement with the grace of his best work, even if the performances and arrangements manage to be something more than the sum of their parts. The Afghan Whigs already-blurred sense of the past makes Do to the Beast a rare 90s reunion album that serves as a continuation of a timeless sound instead of a throwback. Full Review. Lush, passionate and stinking of a crime scene strewn with body parts, 'Do To The Beast' harks gloriously back to 1993s 'Gentlemen' and 1996s 'Black Love' but adds flutters of electronica and folk. A brutal and beauteous slither from the grave. Do to the Beast is the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has long stood out from its peers, with their savage blend of hard rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli's searing angst and obsessions. The new album is both a homecoming it marks their return to Sub Pop and a glimpse into the future of one of the most acclaimed bands of the past thirty years. Go Unlimited

I don't have noticable surface noise - everything plays well, but the whole record sounds very loud and quite distorted - not sure if it's intended. The label on side C is not correctly attached. I'm glad that C-side is not pressed "to the edge" - else the label would have overlapped the grooves! This pressing seems to have issues, indeed.

my copy has lots of problems. surface noise though out but on side 2 on first track there's buzzing and on last track on album there's a static noise that goes in a loop though out the track.i emailed sup pop and im waiting for a response.

dasmfa, no, but 1st track on side 4, royal cream skips. I emailed subpop and was told a few others have also complained. They are investigating. Listen closely to Royal Cream when it kicks in about 1:30 into the track. my vinyl has a noticeable skip, that almost skips in time, but it is definitely not on the recorded track, as I compared it to the mp3.
Kemath
I've just played mine and it does skip but i hardly noticed it. There's a bit of vibration on the cartridge head but there's no surface noise and the record is punchy loud.
Dandr
Duh, I didn't realize this was already a widely recognized glitch.

Same problem here.
Cobyno
I have no problems with skipping or surface noise on my copy.
Flamekiller
Any one else's side A have a lot of surface noise? especially at track 3???
Zololmaran
dasma: Yes, the surface noise is unbelievable, particularly on side A and side D. Unfortunately the whole package is one of the worst sounding pressings I've ever heard. Mine also has blue/black marks ingrained in the white vinyl.
